Tel Mar Elias
In the hills of northern Jordan, surrounded by olive trees and tranquility, lies Tell Mar Elias, traditionally identified with Tishbe, the hometown of the prophet Elijah. A key figure in the Old Testament, Elijah is remembered for his zeal, his miracles, and his mysterious ascent to heaven in a chariot of fire. The site preserves the remains of an impressive Byzantine church complex dating to the 6th century, built to honor the prophet’s legacy. Among the ruins are two churches—one earlier and one larger—evidence of the deep veneration early Christians had for Elijah. Walking through these ruins, one feels a connection to ancient spirituality, where prophecy, nature, and contemplation converge. Tell Mar Elias remains a lesser-known site, yet one of extraordinary depth—perfect for those seeking a quiet, authentic experience off the beaten path.
