Anjara - the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Mountain

Nestled in the Gilead hills a few kilometers south of Ajloun, the small town of Anjara holds a sacred place in the Christian tradition. According to local belief, Jesus and His mother Mary passed through Anjara during their journeys and found rest in a cave overlooking the Jordan Valley. To commemorate this moment, Father Yousef Salmeh Nammatbuilt a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of the Mountain next to the local school. On May 6, 2010, a miraculous event took place: the image of the Virgin inside the church wept tears of blood, drawing global attention and deep devotion. Today, Anjara has become one of the key stops along Jordan’s spiritual pilgrimage route, visited by thousands of pilgrims each year seeking solace, prayer, and encounter. It is a humble yet powerful reminder that grace can dwell in the quiet corners of the earth.
