What does a pilgrimage to Jordan mean?

Pope Benedict, in an address given at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in 2010, gave this summary of Christian pilgrimage:

“To go on pilgrimage is not simply to visit a place to admire its treasures of nature, art or history. To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God where he has revealed himself, where his grace has shone with particular splendor and produced rich fruits of conversion and holiness among those who believe.   Above all, Christians go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land….,.”

There is no other place on Earth where God revealed himself in all 3 persons of the Trinity other than the Baptism Site of Jesus at Bethany beyond the Jordan.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.  And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
